This is going to get really real, real quick so I warned you. Let’s talk DEI.

Everyone is always talking about how important it is to have diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace, right? But let's be real here, actually making it happen is a whole different story. Forget even making it happen, I am talking about just understanding DEI is still a fairly new concept.

Like, humans have been fighting with each other over our differences for centuries. And if we can't even get along on a global scale, how are we supposed to nail it in the office? It's a real struggle.

Don't get me wrong, some companies are making progress when it comes to diversity. But let's not pat ourselves on the back just yet. Getting everyone on an equal playing field and feeling included is a much bigger mountain to climb. And honestly, most businesses haven't quite figured out how to hit all three marks just yet - at least not without some serious effort.

Why DEI Matters

DEI is essential because it promotes a culture of inclusivity and diversity, which leads to numerous benefits for businesses and society. Here are some reasons why DEI matters:

  1. Improved Performance: Research has shown that diverse teams outperform homogeneous teams. By fostering a culture of DEI, businesses can tap into a wider range of skills, experiences, and perspectives, leading to improved performance and innovation.

  2. Better Decision-Making: Diverse teams bring a variety of perspectives and ideas to the table, leading to better decision-making. This is because different viewpoints can identify potential risks and opportunities that may have been overlooked otherwise.

  3. Attract and Retain Talent: In today's job market, employees are looking for companies that prioritize DEI. By implementing DEI initiatives, businesses can attract and retain top talent, leading to a competitive advantage.

  4. Improved Reputation: Companies that prioritize DEI are perceived more positively by consumers and the general public. This can lead to increased brand loyalty and a better reputation.

How DEI Can Benefit Businesses

DEI initiatives can benefit businesses in numerous ways. Here are some benefits:

  1. Increased Innovation: Diverse teams bring a wider range of perspectives and ideas, leading to increased innovation and creativity.

  2. Improved Customer Relations: By implementing DEI initiatives, businesses can better understand and connect with a wider range of customers, leading to improved customer relations.

  3. Enhanced Problem-Solving: Diverse teams can approach problems from a wider range of perspectives, leading to enhanced problem-solving.

  4. Higher Employee Engagement: Employees are more engaged and productive when they feel valued and included. By prioritizing DEI, businesses can create a more engaged and productive workforce.

How DEI Can Benefit Society

DEI is not just beneficial for businesses; it can also benefit society as a whole. Here are some ways:

  1. Increased Social Cohesion: DEI initiatives can promote social cohesion by creating a more inclusive and equitable society.

  2. Reduced Discrimination: By prioritizing DEI, we can reduce discrimination and promote equality for all individuals.

  3. Improved Public Health: DEI initiatives can lead to improved public health by ensuring that everyone has access to healthcare and other resources.

  4. Enhanced Economic Growth: DEI can lead to increased economic growth by creating a more diverse and inclusive workforce.

By embracing diversity and inclusion, businesses can attract the cream of the crop when it comes to talent. And when you've got the best people working for you, you're gonna perform better. It's just science, baby. But it's not just about making bank, you know? DEI is good for society too. It can help bring people together and reduce discrimination, making the world a more peaceful and healthy place to live. Plus, when everyone has a chance to shine, it can drive economic growth and innovation.

Personally speaking, having a diverse team has done wonders for us. Even at the fundamental levels of having a creative spark and super engaging design sprints and discovery sessions to solve a problem. I witness an immense amount of creative ideas outpours.

Everyone is contributing from their own lens of experience and background that often times it makes me go “ Oh Shit! I didn’t even think of that!” and that is what you are striving for in innovation and balance. This is the type of wheels that make the world go a little further and make it a little better.

So, if you're a business owner or a big shot in an organization, it's time to get with the program and start making DEI a priority. Let's make the world a more inclusive and equitable place for all of us!
